Sex industry in Nepal

Sex industry in Nepal

- SIDDARTH KARA
Before venturing to this little-traveled quadrant of Nepal–west Tarai–I was interested to update my research on Kathmandu’s massage parlors and dance bars.

About four-and-a-half years ago, I gathered an extensive account of how commercial sex is sold with young Nepalese girls in Kathmandu, especially in the tourist area of Thamel.

In shelters, I heard numerous stories from young girls trafficked from rural areas into the clubs and parlors, where they were coerced to perform sex acts with tourists and locals alike.

Each dance bar has a distinctive musical theme — American pop,  Bollywood, etc — and while one young girl dances on stage, others sit with men at tables trying to transact for sex. If the club is busy and a man does not transact quickly enough, a bouncer tells him to make way for someone who will.

Along with physical coercion, threats against family members ensure the trafficked girls do as they are told. Small amounts of money sent to parents by the victims also pressure some to remain in sex work as long as possible.

In the massage parlors, the situation remains largely the same. I am typically told there are actually no massages for sale. When I enquire what else might be for sale, the offer to see young girls in a back room quickly emerges.

At casual glance, there seemed to be fewer clubs and parlors operating in Thamel. Local colleagues told me that the police have started to crack down, and also demand higher bribes. This has pushed many establishments into less touristy areas in Kathmandu, which I intend to investigate when I return.

Beyond Kathmandu, the new insights I gained this week on forced labor in Nepal have been in west Tarai, a flat agricultural area along the border with Uttar Pradesh in India.

Throughout this region, I met dozens of former Kamaiya. These are individuals caught in an ancient practice of generational debt bondage. Almost all Kamaiya belong to the lower-caste Tharu ethnic group, and almost all Kamaiya owners belong to the upper caste Brahmin group.

The essence of Kamaiya debt bondage is this — each year Kamaiya enter a “contract” with a landowner to work a large parcel of land. In exchange, they are given a small hut and a few hundred kilograms of rice throughout the year. They receive no money and no share in the income from their work. If they need money for anything, they must borrow it and go deeper into debt. As the debt grows, the bondage is passed from one generation to the next.

The Kamaiya system was officially banned by the Nepalese government in 2000. Land, brick homes, money, economic training, and other support were promised to the Kamaiya in order to ease their transition.

Based on my observation, barely one in ten identified Kamaiya have been provided with a home. Few have received the cash, training, and other support promised.

As a result, none of the former Kamaiya I met is able to earn enough income to survive, and some have receded back into the Kamaiya system.

Perhaps worse, many others have been trafficked to India for labor exploitation.

The situation of the Kamaiya demonstrates the importance of comprehensive and sustained liberation from any slave-like condition, be it a child slave in India, a sex trafficking victim in Moldova, or a labor trafficking victim in the U.S.

Just saying someone is “free” without providing ongoing human rights care and development will likely consign that individual to being re-exploited in any number of ways, especially by opportunistic human traffickers.

Despite the challenges, all former Kamaiya I met relished their new freedom.

“Now we are free!” a man named “Janat” declared, “No one can ever tell us what to do.”

Do the Facebook and LinkedIn People Really Understand the Meaning of Networking?

What does “networking” mean to you?

To me, it means expanding my circle of contacts. When the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a networking event, they expect us to connect with people we don’t know yet! Both the Chamber and BNI encourage what they call a “dance” which is meeting with other members you don’t know well yet, to get to know each other and how you can help each other.

So why is it that some social “networking” sites, like Facebook and LinkedIn, insist that you only connect with people you already know? Why would you need to “invite” someone to be a friend or a contact if you already know them?  This seems like a misnomer to me!

I know what they are trying to do. They want to prevent spamming. But, it is entirely possible to respectfully invite someone to be a new contact, without spam!

I believe the new Facebook algoritm, unpublished of course, has something to do with how many outstanding requests you have and possibly how many rejections you get. That doesn’t mean your invitation was disrespectful or “spammy.”

I have some ideas they could implement, that would still allow those of us who are respectful to expand our networks:

  1. Provide a way to indicate intent – reconnecting, or looking for new connections?
  2. Limit the number of invitations sent to people you don’t know (perhaps 25 or 50 per day?)
  3. Require a hand-typed personal message and/or captcha code
  4. Prevent links from being included in the initial message
  5. Automatically remove outstanding requests after 14 days
  6. Provide a way for people to block friend requests from people who don’t know them

The most critical thing, is to give us a way to state our intent: reconnecting with old friends, or making new ones. Of course this would require them to admit that making new friends is a legitimate undertaking:)  This could be accomplished by separate profiles (one for business, one for personal), or an indication on each connection request sent.  This would allow them to limit the “finding new contacts” activity to prevent massive list building.

People who are only on the site to find old friends could indicate that they don’t want invitations from networkers.  And by the way, those sending invitations should know this before they try to send so it doesn’t count as part of their daily allowance or waste time.  This makes the activity more targeted (thus valuable) for the networkers while protecting the other people from unwanted requests.

Limiting the number of daily requests to add new connections, plus requiring the networkers to add messages and not include links, would frustrate the massive list builders to the point that they would likely find other sites to attack.  But the people who seriously want to expand their spider web with the intent of sharing success tips and helping other people, would stick it out and take the time.

Of course, this approach opens the door to the question: should the sites charge business networkers money and let the other people remain free?  While I am not in favor of them adding fees, it would be one more way to eliminate the massive list builders.  These people wouldn’t likely want to pay for a site that limits them to 25 or 50 connections per day.  They want hundreds!

Now, Facebook as a company claims their site was never intended for marketing.  “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.”  But if that is true, why do they allow paid advertising?  And some days, they try to eliminate advertising by network marketers while other days they let these ads slip through.  Why are other companies any “better” than MLM companies?  Well,  Facebook thinks it is a false claim that anyone can make a full-time income from home.  I beg to differ, and so do Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki, T. Harv Eker and Paul Zane Pilzer!

How much advertising revenue will Facebook give up if they completely shut out network marketers?

I would love your comments on the approach, the recent changes, and where we go from here with networking online!
